Do you know Ken Tanaka?
Ken Tanaka's plight is pretty heart breaking. A born American, Ken Tanaka was adopted and raised in Japan without ever meeting his parents, Jonathan and Linda Smith. He's been posting his story on youtube under the name helpmefindparents for over a year now, recording his journey across America.
Some time ago, he met his uncanny twin David Ury, a comedian who performs improv with the groundlings (an L.A. based comedy troupe with alumni such as Conan O'Brien, Will Ferrell and the late Phil Hartman). It's been long thought that the two men were actually the same man, but that theory was immediately debunked in a video in which the two met in real life.
What's funny about Ken Tanaka are his collaborative works with other fellow youtubers. Take for example his meetup with fellow youtuber TokyoCooney, a comedian at the Tokyo Comedy Store. TokyoCooney (Kevin Cooney) uploaded his reaction as well, allowing viewers to laugh along while watching the hijinx from both viewpoints. There's also Ken's interview with a former hostess, and social commentary with RemiFebruary (all of them are pretty informative and funny).
But what makes Ken Tanaka special is what he's done with the online social community inside and outside of youtube's circle of web celebrities. He's bringing together other personalities in a unique and humorous blend of creativity on par with corporate-sponsored commercial ventures. It's this feeling of entrepreneurship that brings confidence to a system long dominated by large businesses that throw large amounts of money in order to secure an audience.
Creating an online personality is not horribly difficult in this day and age. The hard part, however, lies in finding your audience. And through hard work combined with the willingness to create, you too can achieve that. That pioneering spirit certainly lies with Ken Tanaka, and it shows in his funny videos, his personality, and his quirky everyday adventures.
At the very least, I hope that other voxers will find inspiration that they too can seek their own fame. Keep your head up! And in the meantime, we can at least join in on some funny videos!
